Sound Clip: Rock Pool and Waves by Michael Rooke
Home-made hydrophone placed in a rock pool, a sand pond and then dragged through the shoreline.
tickles my ears. i like it.
Brilliant field recording. Does Michael Rooke have a website, or way to contact him? And also, congratulations Margaret on your project.
Michael Rooke didn’t give me an artist site to share on his posting. Hopefully, he reads his comments so we can all learn more!
PS: Thanks for the congrats on my site!
Hello,
My blog contains various postings related to sound art technology. Hydrophones using an array of sensor technologies (pvdf, piezo and emfit polymer film, plus a few mems devices and electret mics as hydrophones.) – Also covered there are binaural recording mics, how to make ears, obtaining sounds from unusual sources (the earth) via magnetometers – search earth music, and quite a lot related to using the baudline application in linux.
Kind Regards,
Mike.
It begins with the sound of water, trickling softly, tumbling down into the pool. Suddenly it is swallowed up by something bigger, pulling it back as it returns to it’s hole. It is climbing up in that way where you pull up a lot, then fall back a little, pull up, fall back, slowly making pace. Slowly reaching it’s destination. As it gets to the top it begins to slow down. Somehow, in its slow state, it gains momentum. With a surge of energy pulls itself far up, almost to it’s goal. New sounds emanate from the being as it comes up farther and farther.
“Plink, plunk, plop” it yells out in frustration as it falls back away, still not quite reaching it’s goal, “Plink, plop, plop, plunk!” It gets louder and louder. You can hear the anger in its voice as it struggles to make it to its goal. Harder and harder it works, and still it can not make it. The low grumble turns into a growl as its anger shows. Louder and louder it screams. The rage of mother nature burns as it still almost touches the point. Will it ever make it to its destination?
One more surge of energy. One more breath. One more plea and it is there. It is over.
Tiny gurgles awaken the sea. The trickling water cascades down, turning swiftly. It rushes down, plunging over and over. The seas churn, constantly bringing the fresh, salty, life sustaining water to the famished creatures below. In and out goes the current, many times over. There is a lull, then comes the water rushing back. Bubbles run to the surface, foam overlapping in the briny sea. The fresh smell fills the air, but only for a moment. Again and again comes the persistent motion of the tireless wave. Suddenly, we are plunged into the water. Tiny bubbles float to the surface, the only things able to escape the oceans salty grasp. A calming moment graces the landscape, but yet again the water plunges into the indentations among the rocks. The slippery mountains are pounded against, wearing away at the beautiful green hue that plagues the rocks. Tiny whispers and gurgles speak of danger. A great wave pounds the surface of the water to the caves, then returns to the seas once more. A sweet calm is welcomed back again. But the wrath of the sea is never forgotten.
Small gurgles awaken the sea.Waves come crashing forwards then backwards. The oceans stomach growls with hunger.A rush of salty air fills the nostrils of many.Small waves come swaying towards the shore, bringing a whisper with it.The crashing and splashing cause a wave of foamy bubbles to take over.Slowly disappearing into the top layer of the mushy sand. Followed by a moment of silence. One last wave clears the ground of foamy bubbles.Waves are dragged back and forth leaving us with a refreshing sound. One deep breath is taken before jumping in.The ocean growls once more, this time louder than before.Touching the oceans bottom causes me to push myself up.A rushing noise fills my ears.Bubbles pop loudly above be.As i rise small ripples are created in the watter.A large wave comes crashing down.Smacking the ground. A sound so loud it clearly meant danger.Like a drain being unplugged the rushing sound of the oceans stomach simply disappears. silence takes over.
Its body slowly takes the water from its hands and pours it back into its place. Swimming across the water, gentle and cool, the solid body begins to enjoy the bright sun. Water trickles down the carcass’s face and traces across the sand. Breathing in deeply, the gentle ripples quickly shift into raging aggression, choking on the aggression, the body bobs up, searching for air. Mother nature calms itself down momentarily, letting the body drag itself to shore. It begins to gallivant once more, deeper into the liquid, splashing and slapping back at mother nature. After thinking a moment, mother hisses, becoming silent for a moment, she hisses again then her anger surfaces. Swallowing him and drowning him, deeper and deeper into her world. Escaping her clutches, his arms and legs scream for him, violently hitting her. She lets him go, not attempting to grab him again. Gliding back and enjoying the peace, his mind suddenly changes and he begins a violent streak once more. Outraged, she waits a moment, letting him abuse her surface til he begins to swim back. Then it happens, she grabs him and drags him down. Deciding to tease him like he did her, she brings him to the surface once more before she repetitively bobs him up and down, taking him the the open air and then pushing him back to the bottom. The last of his breath comes and everything ends.
A light rain like trickle of little droplets of water, sounding a little like rain drops falling on clay pots. Then a rush of water, a wave of smooth water traveling over its wavy surface. A soft calm stroking in the sound and presence of quick water. Waves in the background, so soft that it calms the spirit. A quick few hard strokes along the water’s welcoming presence. The innocent soul then leaves the water and the rushing waves continue on. A sudden plunge enters the soft water and a swishing sound soon follows the deep plunge. Lastly a few small droplets drop into the water finishing the moment.
This is really cool at first it sounded as if it started as a little bit of water and soon ended up as on ocean or at least that is what I thought. But it was really cool.
Thank you all for your interpretations and comments. I find them very inspiring and hope to focus more on natural sources of sound.
Magnetic field strength is an alternative form of art expression specially when its from mother nature
– disturbances around the field due to passing chunks of metal (vehicles) the earths field drift can all be detected using a pair of extremely sensitive magnetometers – A piece called “Earth Music” can be heard soon via sound is art.
