Sound Clip: Magnetic Breeze by Mike Rooke
Sounds from a magnet suspended in the wind.

Simply increilbe, a sound totally amazing, I love your blog Margaret, is a true jewel, continues to surprise with these sounds as enigmatic and fascinantes.Saludos from Bilbao, Spain
I agree that the sounds are interesting, Chema (hey, greetings from Wollongong Australia – I have visited Bilbao on a number of occasions with my band – It is one of my favourite places on earth).
The thing that most intrigues me about this piece is its indeterminate nature. Not sure about the technical specs on the recording, ie: how the sounds were made (Margaret, the link is a dead end). Was the magnet suspended in and electro-magnetic or electrical field, either natural or man-made? etc. etc. A wind-played instrument is a wonderful thing, and these sorts of things can be installed as permanent installations.
Thanks again Margaret. More great sounds…

Brent
Brent, theres four ring magnets, two holding the cd to the cable and two more at the end of the cable. The magnetic flux from both is detected by the sensitive flux gate magnetometers sitting on the ground. The magnetometers output a signal above 50 Khz, which is clocking a shift register, its divided by 8, the resulting tone is fed to the recorder (complete with a multitude of harmonics). I select the interesting “wobbles” in baudline save the result and pass those for further processed with an application called metasynth. – The magnetometers are sensitive enough to detect the disturbance caused by a mechanical watch in the earths magnetic field, maybe thats another work – Earth time.
