Sound Clip: Chilliochaki by Augustine Leudar
Chulliochaki is an 8 speaker surround sound installation that takes the listener on a journey through the rainforest to meet the mythical guardian and notorious trickster of the Amazon – The Chulliochaki. All the sounds are field recordings I recorded during the several years I lived in Pucallpa in the Peruvian Amazon. These field recordings have been subsequently manipulated digitally and seek to create an original atmosphere rather than just mimic the rainforest at night. The Chullichaki is often described as a mischievous spirit in Amazonian folklore but the Incas also regarded him as the Guardian of the entire Amazon forest. He features prominently in Amazonian mythology and fairy tales. The Icaro (magical song) at the end of the piece is sung by Peruvian currandero Jesus Escalante MacMillan. This mix is a stereo mix down of the original 8 speaker mix and loses some of its effect in transition but should serve to give an idea of the piece. The stereo mix down is the last track on the album “Invisible Forest”. It also featured as part of the “Biomes at Night,” a nocturnal sound installation at the Eden project in Cornwall – possibly the world’s largest ever sound installation!
Dear Augustine,
I really enjoyed listening to the Amazon rainforest with all the sounds of the surroundings. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to hearing what you come up with next.
Peace,
Mike
