Sound Clip: Excerpt From Anti-Musical Celestial Forces by Kim Cascone
‘Anti-Musical Celestial Forces’ presents a thirty minute cinematic montage of field recordings – gathered in the fall of 2008 while on tour in Europe, mixed with computer generated textures and spoken word.
The act of field recording flattens an acoustic environment into two dimensions, the result is most often
a poor simulacra of the original. The recording, now infinitely repeatable, serves as a low resolution
‘snapshot,’ a souvenir, thus becoming an imaginary place. The sound field becomes detached;
transforming into a foreign and synthetic artifact. This synthetic quality allows for the construction of
new auditory fields by combining linear fragments of field recordings with computer generated sounds.
Using these fragments, which behave like shots in a film montage, the listener constructs highly
personalized meanings via a narrative constructed on-the-fly rather than have their attention directed by
an external agenda.
The sounds on ‘Anti-Musical Celestial Forces’ emanate from the cracks in the world but are ultimately
composed by the listener.
A lost track from The Fifth Element Soundtrack.
